#1. Charlie’s Soap

If you are worried about chemicals, Charlie’s Soap is extremely safe for babies. It is non-toxic and chemical free. For some time, I used Charlie’s Soap just for my cloth diapers; it is one of the few recommended brands. It is pure, with no added fragrances and chemical brighteners.

Many parents are looking for laundry detergent that is safe for the environment. Charlie’s Soap is biodegradable, non-toxic and won’t irritate your baby’s skin. Even though the detergent itself has a slight soap smell, your clothes will be odorless.

Because Charlie’s Soap is so gentle, it won’t wear down your clothes. Conventional detergent is one of the reasons why our clothes get holes so quickly. Opting for one of the best natural laundry detergents for babies will make all of your clothes have a long life span, which saves you money.

The cost isn’t insane. One container will get you between 80 to 100 loads of laundry. If you are a cloth diapering family, it is convenient to use the same detergent on your family’s clothes and diapers.

  • Toxin Free
  • Gentle on baby’s sensitive skin
  • Biodegradable and environmentally safe
  • Large container of soap
  • It tends to change smell after opened but doesn’t affect the efficiency.
  • Can only purchase online

#2. Biokleen Liquid Laundry Detergent, Free & Clear

You may have noticed Biokleen in your local grocery store in their natural department. Biokleen is an excellent selection if you want a detergent that is free of chemicals, dyes and fragrance. For babies with sensitive skin or eczema, Biokleen is safe and gentle. They use some chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which is a plant based surfactant. Also, they use grapefruit seed extracts to get rid of stains, but it doesn’t leave any lasting scents.

Instead of purchasing a detergent just for your baby’s clothes, use this soap on everyone’s items. Some parents prefer a laundry detergent with fragrance, but Biokleen will leave your clothes without any scent. It is very similar to Charlie’s Soap. They also have a few varieties like Citrus Essence, Baby, Sports and Cold Water.

One of the great things about Biokleen is the bottles last a long time. You don’t have to use much each load. The bottles are 64 ounces; you should be able to wait for one to two months between purchasing. The formula is 3x concentrated. You get 128 High-Efficiency washes or 64 standard washes.

  • Free of chemicals, dyes and fragrances
  • Safe for babies with sensitive skin or eczema
  • Comes in a large bottle that will last a long time
  • Less washes for standard machines
  • May not get the thick, heavy stains out

#3. Seventh Generation Free & Clear

Here is another excellent choice for the best laundry detergent for babies. Seventh Generation makes several chemical free products that are safe for children, such as diapers and wipes. Their free & clear laundry detergent is free of chemicals and made from 96% plant-based ingredients, which means it is good for you and the environment. These ingredients are USDA certified bio-based products. Also, 100% of the solution is biodegradable. It is labeled as an EPA Safer Choice Product.

Babies tend to heavily soil their clothes with spit up or terrible diaper blowouts. I like Seventh Generation because it removes the stains well, even the bad ones from blowouts. It is concentrated, making it durable, and you can get about 50 loads per bottle.

Some parents use this laundry detergent to wash their cloth diapers. Personally, I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear it works great. Overall, it is a great option for the best baby laundry detergent and will do perfectly for your family laundry detergent.

  • 96% of products are plant based
  • 100% biodegradable
  • EPA Safer Choice Product
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Non-toxic, free of brighteners, dyes, and synthetic fragrances
  • The cap is hard to read
  • Don’t get as many loads out of a bottle

#4. Tide PODS Free and Gentle Laundry Detergent

Many people love Tide for their clothes. In fact, I have used Tide on and off for years. However, the traditional version of Tide is rough on a baby’s skin. They came out with a newer product in their new PODS. I love PODS; they are a bit more expensive, but you just place one or two in the washing machine and off you go. There is no need to measure in the cap when you use PODS.

Tide Free and Gentle isn’t marketed towards using it for babies, but it is gentle and efficient. They are fragrance and dye free, but they do brighten your clothes. I wouldn’t recommend them for using on cloth diapers. The brightening shouldn’t cause a problem with your baby; Tide had the PODS tested by dermatologists to ensure they are hypoallergenic.

If you want a convenient, hypoallergenic choice that you can purchase in the stores, Tide PODS Free and Gentle is an excellent option.

  • Fragrance and dye free
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Easy to use PODS
  • Sold in all stores
  • Contains brighteners which may irritate
  • Expensive in comparison to other laundry detergents

#5. Dreft Stage 1: Newborn Liquid Laundry Detergent

Dreft has a smell that is intoxicating to parents. It smells like a baby, so delicate and sweet. Mothers have used Dreft for decades, cleaning their baby’s clothes. Notice that I listed Stage 1. Dreft breaks up their products based on the age of the child; they are one of the only companies to do so. Stage 2 is for active babies and toddler. You will want to try Stage 1 because it is a hypoallergenic formula, intended to use on children with sensitive skin.

Even though it is designed for newborns and sensitive skin, Dreft Stage 1 is tough on stains. However, heavier stains are better for Stage 2. Dreft is formulated for High-Efficiency Washing machines and standard machines. I have used Dreft sometimes and can attest to its ability to clean. However, I wouldn’t advocate the use of it on cloth diapers.

  • Unique formula designed for newborns and young infants
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Designed for Standard and High-Efficiency Washing machines
  • Lovely fragrance
  • Uses chemicals
  • Doesn’t fight stains as well as Stage 2
  • Expensive in comparison to other brands of detergents

#6. Babyganics 3X Baby Laundry Detergent, Fragrance-Free

Babyganics sells a large variety of baby products. All of them are created to be mild and gentle on baby’s skin and system. They are produced from natural products. Babyganics developed their formula using plant based and enzyme based materials, all of which are safe and natural. They are still powerful enough to remove stains.

For parents looking to avoid chemicals, Babyganics offers the best laundry detergent for babies free from harsh chemicals found in conventional detergent choices. There are no optical brighteners, phthalates, phosphates, sulfates and other toxins.

Does your child have sensitive skin or eczema? Babyganics has been tested by pediatricians and dermatologists to ensure it is hypoallergenic. Many parents use Babyganics for their children with eczema and experience fewer flare-ups.

If you have a High-Efficiency Washing machine, you can use Babyganics and get as many as 60 loads out of one bottle. There are fragrance-free versions and a lavender-scented laundry detergent.

  • Uses plant-based materials and enzyme based material
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Designed for Standard and High-Efficiency Washing machines
  • Can be employed in High-Efficiency Machines
  • Only get 60 loads out of one bottle
  • Contains Sodium Borate which is a controversial ingredient

#7. Green Shield Organic Free and Clear Baby Laundry Detergent

Are you hoping for a certified organic baby laundry detergent? Green Shield is one of the only options you have that is gentle for baby, their clothes and the environment. The USDA has several requirements that Green Shield must meet to be labeled organic. You may be familiar with Green Shield because they create other natural products, like mattresses.

There aren’t any harsh chemicals included in the soap so that you won’t find a laundry list of ingredients. Green Shield has no fragrances and dyes; it is a hypoallergenic formula. The formula can get rid of stains.

Green Shield Organic Free and Clear Detergent can be used in standard washing machines and High-Efficiency machines. In a 50 oz bottle, you typically can get 50 HE loads or 33 standard loads. For a family that is ready to ditch the chemicals and GMOs, Green Shield is the ideal choice.

  • Certified Organic
  • Free of harmful chemicals
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Fragrance free
  • Only get 30-55 loads out of one bottle

Most babies have sensitive skin. Some have reactions to the chemicals inside of laundry detergent. It is best to start off with a soap hat is gentle enough to not irritate their skin. If you opt not to use mild version, your baby may have more outbreaks and eczema.

There are so many chemicals in standard laundry detergent. You will find things like phenols (endocrine disrupters), petroleum by-products, fragrances (phthalates), bleach and brighteners.
