Everything You Need to Know About Baby Jumpers

Whether it was your mom who told you about this toy, or you saw it at your friends house, the time has come for your baby to get a baby jumper. Baby jumpers are perfect for 4 to 6-month-old babies who have the strength to hold their heads up but aren’t yet standing.

Baby jumpers are incredibly popular with moms all across the country. I’m willing to bet even some of your mommy friends already have one! Let’s talk about why everyone love baby jumpers so much, and go over some of the benefits.

Baby jumpers are incredibly popular with moms all across the country. I’m willing to bet even some of your mommy friends already have one! Let’s talk about why everyone love baby jumpers so much, and go over some of the benefits.

  • Increased Strength

Baby jumpers help young babies to develop their muscles and their ability. Combined with tummy time, baby jumpers are one of the best activities for helping your child grow the muscles they need to use when it comes to standing, walking, and even running.

  • Improves Motor Control

Baby jumpers require your baby to learn how to jump up and down, how to balance in a seat, and if the jumper comes with an activity center, how to reach out and play with different toys. Your baby will interact with his or her jumper continuously while they are jumping.

All of these skills are incredibly helpful in teaching your baby to improve his or her motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Learning how to grab, how to turn something over, to spin, and even to jump, these are all skills that will help with your babies healthy development.

  • Helps Improve Baby’s Mood

Bouncing up and down brings joy and laughter to your baby. Interacting with brightly colored toys, songs, music, and lights, all stimulate your babies brain and help with development and improved mood. This, in turn, improves your babies ability to eat and digest food and to have a better nights sleep.

  • Makes Time for Mommy

The first 3 months of motherhood are intense. You feel that you can never put your baby down, and in fact, you never want to put your baby down! But after a few months of this, we all need to make some time for ourselves, even if it is only for 10 minutes.

Putting your baby in the jumper gives you time to drink a cup of coffee, make dinner, or just sit down and rest for 5 minutes. This gives you the energy you need to give your baby all the love in the world.

Now that you understand the point and purpose of a baby jumper, I hope you’re getting excited about shopping for your first jumper for your baby! Trust me when I say that it will change your motherhood world. You’ll finally have just that little bit of extra time for yourself, and that is all you need to become a better and more attentive mother.

When you start shopping around for baby jumpers, you may notice some other similar products on the market. These products are labelled as swings and bouncers. This may leave you wondering, what are the differences between jumpers, bouncers, and swings?

The Three Different Types of Baby Jumpers

  • doorway jumper
  • stationary jumper
  • stationary activity jumper

The first and oldest type of jumper is the doorway jumper. A doorway jumper does just what it sounds like: it hooks into your doorframe and allows baby to jump up and down in the doorway of whatever room you’re currently occupying.

Baby Jumper Reviews

Best Activity Baby Jumper

#1) Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo

In the ongoing debate of which is the best baby jumper on the market today, the Rainforest Jumperoo consistently comes out on top. This jumper is the full package, with thoughtful features and things to please both mom and baby.

When it comes to baby’s entertainment, this jumper has toys, lights, sound, music, and bright colors. All the different animal and brightly colored toys will keep your kids entertained long enough for you to finally get some work done!

Its construction is well made, the seat height is adjustable, it stores well, and it’s very lightweight and portable. The frame is colorful without being the ugliest toy in the house. It’s also very easy to move around when your baby isn’t sitting inside it.

This activity center jumper is an all around win. For me, it wins in the categories of entertainment, storage, safety, and portability. No question, the rainforest jumper is my favorite on the market today.

  • Many great toys and it’s easy to attach more
  • Great sounds and funny music
  • Height adjustments are easy
  • Simple set up and assembly
  • Large frame doesn’t always fit through doorways
  • Tough for babies to rotate seat on their own

#2) Fisher-Price Luv U Zoo Jumperoo

Although not quite as great as the rainforest jumperoo, this jumper is still a great option for moms with a budget. It comes with entertaining toys and great music, plus it’s easy to get your baby in and out of the seat.

It has a few downsides, but all in all, this is still a solid jumper, made well, and a safe choice for your baby.

  • Wonderful collection of engaging toys
  • Lots of good music to entertain baby
  • Easy to put baby into seat and to take baby out
  • The teether works well
  • Fits easily through doors and hallways
  • A little wobbly on the ground
  • Not for smaller babies
  • Difficult for smaller babies to reach the toys

#3) Bright Starts Around We Go 3-in-1 Activity Center Zippity Zoo

The Bright Starts Around We Go 3-in-1 is one of the more interesting jumpers and baby play centers on the market right now. Instead of having a tray surrounding the chair, the tray is off to the side.

As an added benefit, the jumper seat can be removed as your baby grows older and stronger, and you baby can use the play table as a crutch to help them learn to stand and walk. This toy really grows with your baby. Even when they outgrow the baby jumper phase, you can still use this toy.

On top of that, it has a great selection of toys on the attached play tray. The tray is brightly colored, makes different noises and sounds, and you can attach more toys to the tray to continuously engage your learning baby. This toy is a great one to buy when they are young, and continue using as they grow older.

This jumper is well constructed, sits stationary in the middle of the room, and engages your baby with plenty of toys and sounds. It is a definite win in the categories of product creativity, entertainment, and construction.

  • Good selection of toys for your baby
  • Can add additional toys to keep baby entertained
  • Keeps babies entertained for 30 minutes or more
  • Jumper seat detaches so toy grows with your baby
  • A bit bulky and difficult to store
  • No lights to entertain baby

#4) Evenflo ExerSaucer Jump and Learn Jumper

The Evenflo Exersaucer is one of the best jumpers with a pad added to it. The entire jumper was developed with help from the Child Development Center, so you know it has your babies health and safety included into the design.

The Evenflo Exersaucer is one of the other models on the market that comes with a soft landing pad to protect your baby from bumps and scrapes. The seat is also height adjustable so this jumper can easily grow with your baby.

Beyond the safety concerns, this jumper is extremely entertaining for young babies. It has lots of really fun toys for baby to enjoy, it looks like a giant, interactive cartoon character sitting in the room. The noises are engaging enough for your baby to enjoy, without annoying you as you try to get some chores or cooking done around the house.

Lastly, it is really easy to set up. My husband and I were able to throw this one together in under 10 minutes, and we still felt that our baby would be completely safe sitting inside of it.

  • Many great toys with fun sound effects
  • Swivel seat turns all the way around
  • Easy to assemble
  • Sturdy construction keeps your baby safe
  • Might be too big for smaller babies
  • Not super portable

Best Stationary Jumper

#5) Jolly Jumper on a Stand for Rockers

The Jolly Jumper has been a number one bestseller for years, and it’s easy to see why. With its simple setup and high level of safety, this simple design is the best stationary jumper you can find on the market today.

The seat of the Jolly Jumper hangs down from a stationary frame, so that it acts similar to a door hanging jumper, without needing a door to be completely set up. This style of seat adds a bit more room for your baby to develop their leg muscles, as well as providing a good amount of back and spinal support.

It doesn’t come with lots of extra toys and gadgets, but what you lack in colorful explosions, you make up for in price. If you’re on a budget looking for your next great toy, this Jolly Jumper might be a good choice.

  • Very easy to assemble
  • Sets up anywhere in the house
  • Baby can turn all the way around
  • Folds flat for easy storage
  • Complicated to get your baby into the seat
  • Takes up a lot of space when assembled

Best doorway jumpers

#6) Graco Doorway Bumper Jumper, Little Jungle

If you’re looking to buy a doorway jumper instead of a stationary jumper, the Graco Doorway Bumper Jumper is the absolute best choice. This doorway jumper has an excellent design that keeps your baby safe. The spring loaded clamp is easy to set up and take down.

This design also comes with a toy tray to keep your baby entertained while they jump. The toys can be detached and reattached as you need, so you can switch things up to entertain your baby.

  • Toy tray keeps baby entertained
  • Height adjusts so the jumper grows with your baby
  • Easy to get your baby in and out of the seat
  • Easy to install
  • Only works well in wider doorways
  • Plastic clips on the straps can wear through the fabric over time, potentially causes straps to break

#7) Sassy Seat Doorway Jumper, 5 Toys

Another one of the best doorway jumpers on the market, the Sassy Seat has the advantage of fitting into doorways on older houses that other doorway jumpers struggle to fit into. Parents who live in older style houses struggle to find a clamp that can fit around their wide doorframes. Luckily, sassy made one to fit the bill in this Jumper.

The seat bounces and spins, letting your baby play in all different directions. It can be a bit of a safety hazard how much the seat spins, but it doesn’t tip over. This is still a common choice for many parents shopping for doorway jumpers.

  • Fits in many different doorway sizes
  • Seat can bounce and spin
  • Easy to assemble
  • Seat doesn’t come with a toy tray
  • Hard to get baby out of the seat
  • Seat can lean over a lot, so it looks like baby might fall out

Why Didn’t I Include the Baby Einstein Jumpers?

You may have noticed that I didn’t include any Baby Einstein Jumpers on my list of the best baby jumpers on the market today. It might seem like an odd choice, given their overall popularity, but I have my concerns regarding the construction of Baby Einstein products, and I’d like to share them with you.

  • Baby Einstein had a product recall on everything produced before 2011, making it difficult to trust them.
  • Seat construction is hard and uncomfortable for babies
  • Tight springs prevent bouncing and keep babies feet off the floor

As you can see, there are some serious design issues in Baby Einstein Jumpers, and until the company puts some work into correcting these flaws, I don’t want to recommend them to my readers.

Before you go ahead and search for the right jumper, you need to know what to look for.

What To Consider When Purchasing the Best Baby Jumper

  1. General Jumper Safety: The most important thing you need to consider when buying a jumper is the safety of your baby. You want to make sure that the jumper will fit your baby, that your baby won’t fall out or fall down, and that there are no small toys or pieces that your baby couldn’t chew off and choke on. I’ll go further into specific safety concerns later.
  2. Weight Restrictions: Jumpers are only for babies who can hold their own heads up unassisted. Usually, babies can start using a jumper from 4 to 6 months old. But before you buy a jumper, make sure you read the weight restrictions for your specific model. Buying a jumper that fits your baby is one of the most important things you can do.
  3. Baby Jumper Seat Size: The seats on baby jumpers are usually one size fits all, which can be problematic since different babies are all different sizes! When my little girl was getting her first jumper, she was just a little bit too small to sit comfortably in the seat. I knew she would grow into it quickly, so in the meantime, I stuff some sheets or towels into the seat with her, to give her some extra support.
  4. Suspenders: The suspenders on a baby jumper are the straps that allow the seat to hang from the frame or from the doorway. You’ll want to make sure that the straps on the suspender are strong enough to support the weight of your baby. Also, you want to make sure the straps stay out of your baby’s way so that she can’t get tangled up in them.
  5. Flexibility & Adjustability: You’ll also want to buy a jumper that is able to grow with your baby. Adjustable straps on the jumper will allow the seat height to change as your baby grows. A smaller baby needs longer straps so his or her feet can touch the ground, but as baby gets bigger and heavier, you need the jumper to be flexible and adjustable.
  6. Storage: If you’ve got more than one kid, you know how precious floor space can be. When you’re choosing a jumper, try to choose one that folds up small and is easily stored under a bed or in a closet. The last thing you want is a complicated jumper that needs to be taken apart after each use, and reconstructed the next time baby wants to jump!
  7. Toys: If you choose a jumper with an activity center, you want to make sure you choose one with toys that your baby will love. If you already know that your little one loves to play with animal toys, then you can get one with a zoo or tropical theme! If your little one is easily startled or doesn’t like loud noises, you can get a jumper that doesn’t make lots of sounds.
  8. Portability: You want your jumper to be moveable. Can you imagine buying a heavy jumper that you can’t move around the house by yourself? It sounds impossible. Be sure to buy a jumper that is sturdy enough to protect your baby, but lightweight enough so that you can move it out of the way without having to ask someone else for help.

Now that you know what to look for, you’re almost ready to shop for your perfect baby jumper. But before you do, let’s take a closer look at the different safety concerns that parents want to be aware of before they buy their next jumpers.

  • Collisions
  • Clamp Slipping
  • Siblings

This is a concern especially for parents looking to buy a doorway baby jumper. With a doorway baby jumper, there is a distinct possibility that your baby could sway back and forth, hitting his head against the wall. To prevent against this, you can make sure your baby is in a wide doorframe where a collision is more difficult, or put padding along the doorframe.

Those are the three main safety issues to be concerned with when purchasing your first baby jumper. As long as you choose a jumper with good reviews, follow all the directions during set up, and supervise your baby while he or she is in the jumper, everything should be just fine.

The Difference Between Jumpers, Bouncers & Swings

Baby jumpers, bouncers, and swings are all very popular items for new moms. Despite the different names, each has a different purpose. The main difference between all three items is the age at which your baby should be playing in them.

  • Baby Swing
  • Baby Bouncer
  • Baby Jumper

A baby swing is best for newborn babies up to about three or four months. This is just a cotton or other soft fabric swing that you can lay your baby in and swing them back and forth.
